China has sent a six-member team of observers to the Occupied Palestinian Territories for today's elections. Former Chinese ambassador to Turkey Yao Kuangyi is heading the team, and says China believes the elections will go smoothly.
Head of Chinese Observers Yao Kuangyi said, "As one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, China has always supported the Palestinian people's struggle for their national sovereignty and Middle East peace. State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan visited the Middle East at the end of last year, extending the Chinese government's good wishes for the elections. The presence of the six Chinese observers during the elections is to show China's support. We will meet leading Palestinian officials, investigate polling stations and talk with voters. As far as we know, the preparation for the elections is going well and we believe the elections will go smoothly."
