World reactions to Arafat´s death

Chinese President Hu Jintao expressed his condolences. He said he hoped Palestinian people will carry on Arafat's cause of pushing forward the Mid-East peace process.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan called on both Israelis and Palestinians to make even greater efforts to bring about the peaceful realization of the Palestinian right of self-determination.

U.S. President George W. Bush called it a significant moment for the Palestinians in their bid for peace and an independent state.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair also vowed to work with the U.S. and the E.U. to help achieve a peaceful Mideast.

The Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, said they mourn with pride for the Palestinian people. It hailed Arafat as an icon and a great leader. Former Palestinian Security Minister Mohammed Dahlan and Top Islamic Jihad leader Mohammad al-Hindi, both said they hoped the transfer of Arafat's responsibilities would be smooth.

Arab League spokesman Hossam Zaki said it is a great loss, not only to the Palestinian cause but to the Arab world.

Condolences also came from Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Thabo Mbeki and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
