Bush comments on new Palestinian leadership

US President George W. Bush believes a new Palestinian leadership would improve chances for the Middle East peace process.

After meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on Wednesday, Bush said that there would be "an opening for peace" when a new Palestinian leadership emerges.

Bush reiterated that he was committed to the two-state vision, of the "roadmap" peace plan for the region. For the past two years, the Bush administration has refused to deal with Arafat, insisting that the Palestinian leader failed to control militant Palestinian groups.
