CPPCC members call for concrete reply to proposals

The curtain fell yesterday on this year's session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. For more than a week, the country's top political advisory body held intense discussions on issues of national concern. This time around, though, members voiced hopes that their many proposals will receive a better response from the government.

After ten busy days, China's top political advisory body concluded its annual session.

The chairman of the body's national committee called the past days a "complete success".

Jia Qinglin, Chairman of CPPCC National Committee, said, "It was a democratic, fact-finding, united and morale-boosting session, a session with fruitful results. It has demonstrated the vigor and vitality of the patriotic united front under the leadership of the Communist Party of China."

The conference approved amendments to its Charter, incorporating former President Jiang Zemin's Three Represents thought.

Another revision pledges to make the institution more effective. That represents the opinions of many of its members.

CPPCC Member Wang Jixiang said, "We hope our proposals can be better implemented or receive better reply or explanations. This will be a great incentive for members to come up with more and better proposals."

Members submitted more than 4,000 proposals concerning all issues in the country over the past year. Although each received a reply, members say they are not fully satisfied with the way they were implemented.

On the other hand, they acknowledge that they should work harder on the quality of their advice.

CPPCC Member Li Jiayin said, "The conference has urged members to carry out in-depth investigation and research for their proposals. The proposals must not be about the issues only, but be based on concrete research and include feasible solutions."

Members of the top political advisory body have had a short but fruitful session. They have put forward an unprecedented amount of proposals. How these proposals will influence the nation's economic and social life remains to be seen.
