During the annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, all members gathered to share their opinions on the nation's long-term development. Let's take a look at the major results of the meeting.

The annual gathering of more than 2,000 CPPCC members began last week on March the 3rd in Beijing. In his report to the session, CPPCC chairman Jia Qinglin reviewed the organization's work over the past year.

He said CPPCC members conducted in-depth investigations into issues surrounding the country's social and economic development. Based on this research, hundreds of proposals were submitted to the session.

On the Taiwan issue, the chairman reiterated the basic principle of "peaceful reunification and one country, two systems". He also called for promoting personnel contacts and economic and cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Strait.

The amendment to the CPPCC Charter was another primary task for the session. Secretary General of the CPPCC National Committee Zheng Wantong said the proposed revision focused mainly on the incorporation of the "Three Represents" Thought into the Charter.

The session closed Friday afternoon and the proposed amendments, submitted on Sunday, have been approved with a majority vote. The new charter has been put into immediate effect.
