The Chairman of China's top advisory body, Jia Qinglin, has voiced strong opposition to attempts by Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian to achieve independence through a referendum.
The CPPCC chairman made his views known on Thursday at a group discussion of Taiwan NPC deputies. Jia Qinglin stressed that the mainland will adhere to the "one China, two systems" policy. He added that the mainland will respect democracy in Taiwan, but is against those who want to destabilize the relationship across the Straits. He pointed out that no party has the right to separate Taiwan from China.
