The current CPPCC session is now holding a plenary meeting to discuss proposed amendments to its charter.
This is the fourth amendment since the the charter was drawn up in 1954. It was last revised in 2000.
This time, the revision proposals focus mainly on the incorporation of the "Three Represents" theory. The theory was adopted by the Communist Party of China to help it adapt to changing times. Also expected to be added to the charter are some important ideas and policies adopted at the Party's 16th National Congress, held in late 2002.
The charter will also be amended to take into account the experiences of CPPCC members at various levels so as to promote the institutional development of the advisory body.
The CPPCC Standing Committee said the planned revision will be of great importance for China in maintaining and improving multi-party cooperation and the political consultation system, as well as in promoting the progress of socialism.
CPPCC members will hold group discussion on the revision proposals right after the plenary meeting today. The final draft will be passed by March 11, a day before the end of this year's session.
