India has called for expert training to effectively combat bird flu in South Asian countries. Indian Health Minister Sushma Swaraj made the remark on Monday after an emergency meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, or SAARC.
The New Delhi meeting was prompted by the World Health Organization. With the rapid spread of the bird flu, the WHO warns that it could be more deadly than the SARS outbreak that killed more than 800 people worldwide last year.
Addressing a news conference, the Indian health minister pointed out that it is equally important to deal with the psychological panic caused by the virus. So far, India has no reported cases of bird flu, but it has already banned processed and live poultry imports.
