Health, food and animal experts began an urgent meeting in Italy on Tuesday to discuss the bird flu outbreak in Asia.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization is hosting the three-day meeting at its Rome headquarters. The experts hope to develop shared strategies to help affected countries respond to the existing emergency, and prevent future outbreaks of the disease.

The experts are meeting privately with the results of their discussions scheduled to be announced at a news conference on Thursday.

The experts at the meeting include high-level veterinary officials from stricken countries and representatives of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
