More provinces in Thailand hit by bird flu epidemic

Thailand has expanded its list of bird-flu-stricken provinces from 13 to 25.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak announced Wednesday that the authorities would take stricter measures to check the spread of the disease. He said they planned to kill all poultry within a 5-kilometer radius of areas where infected birds had been found, and prohibit the transport of chickens within a 50-kilometer radius.

The country has slaughtered about 10 million chickens in recent weeks.
