The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO, has expressed serious concern about the quick spread of bird flu in East Asia.

On Thursday, it called for a probe of possible links among various outbreaks. The FAO said the situation in Vietnam seemed to be deteriorate even though the country had rapidly applied appropriate control measures, including killing more than 1 million infected birds.

The FAO said new outbreaks may occur in Vietnam. So far, 12 out of the 14 hospitalized patients in Vietnam have died from the flu type A, transmitted from the infected chicken.
