Yes, so the 14 contestants are ready to be on the stage. Let’s give them a big welcome!

OK, now the 14 contestants are on the stage. Let’s give them a big hand again to wish them good luck!

H: Welcome back to the national final of CCTV 4th annual of star of outlook English talent competition. And now you are in the teenagers’ semi-final.

Tonight’s competition is comprised of 3 parts: prepared speech, question and answer, and set question.

Only the top 9 contestants will survive these 3 rounds. That means only 60% of them will win. And the rest will be eliminated.

So please stay with us for tonight’s exciting competition.

  第一輪

OK now let’s kick off the very first round: prepared speech.

OK now let’s welcome the very first one, contestant number 1.

  So, what’s your topic today?

C: My topic today is altitude is the right attitude.

  Good morning dear friends:

Now standing in front of you is an optimistic and confident girl, but no more than half a year ago, things were quite the opposite. I was recommended for admission to Fudan University, so my parents sent me to study with undergraduates. I really had a hard time fitting in. Since it was the first time for me to live in a dormitory, and all the students around me are two or three years older. Worst of all, I couldn't get use to the food there. I kept complaining to my father on the phone, hoping to get some comfort. To my surprise, he said to me:" Stop complaining, my dear. You are so lucky. You don't have to take part in the college entrance examination, so you can manage your time freely. The difficulties you have now will make you braver. Just remember: gratitude is the right attitude everyday." After my father told me the last few words, I realized how I should lead my life. That is to take a grateful attitude towards my family, my friends, the people who helped me, and even the difficulties I had. I should thank my family for taking care of me, and always being there to support me. I should thank my friends for sharing good times and bad with me. I should never miss a chance to smile and say "thank you" to others. I should also thank the difficulties I have, because by overcoming them, I will improve a lot.

I tried to communicate more with the people around me, and find that they were all kind and friendly. Now we have a wonderful time together. This experience taught me how to make friends, and how to be independent. Life becomes much easier for me now. Everyday I take some spare time to meditate, and to appreciate all I have.

My living principle is: "Gratitude is the right attitude." What about yours?

  Thank you!

H: So, to ensure the consistency of the judgment, after the first 3 speakers’ speeches, the judges will have a short discussion over their performance. And then they will give the scores.

  That’s right.

So now let’s move directly to contestant number 2.

OK now let’s give a big hand to contestant number 2.

  C: Good morning, everyone!

Most Chinese people these days know what it is like to have an “English teacher”, since almost all pupils study English from Year three. Usually that first English teacher will be a young and lovely lady in primary school. But my first English teacher is none other than my father. Looking back, I can see that, when I was only a little carefree girl, he created an English environment by providing me with flash cards, fun English-language toys and even dolls which sang English songs! My interest in English had definitely been awakened when I began to learn the English alphabet at school. Just imagine, he went a step further and asked me to learn “New Concept English” by myself! I was confused and even angry. I could not understand how a father could be so strict with his little girl. All the same, he never gave up and he gently insisted that I follow through with his ideas. At first, I read stories with tears in my eyes and I actually hated them because they were too difficult for me. I eventually came to love the funny stories and, to be honest; my father was always there with a helping hand. I am sure that my English would never have come so far without his support. And that’s how my father is not only my first English teacher but also my lifelong teacher. He is the one who awoke my interest, who gave me confidence and who offered me much needed help.

H: Next one is contestant number 3.

  So what’s your topic today?

C: My topic is about a chance.

  H: A chance?

  C: Yes, a chance!

  H: What kind of chance?

C: It’s a chance for all of us, for whole humanity as I could say. But mostly it’s for Chinese.

H: OK, so now let’s listen to that.

C: Hi, I’m Alex from BeiJing No.80 middle school. It’s an honor for me to have this opportunity to share some of thoughts with all of you at this moment.

As we all know, Beijing has the opportunity to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Game. We have been waiting for years for this chance to show others around the world to our very home, and show them the combination of technology, history, and environment that we all cherish well. We’re pretty satisfied with our nationality, locally. But as I traveled to a few foreign countries, I realize that some children with Chinese backgrounds are unwilling or ashamed to be what they are, because of some unavoidable racism and racial discrimination. And some are just embarrassed because they have black hair, brown eyes and yellow skin; they think being like this makes them look ugly, some even wished that they were Caucasian. It’s a sad reality that these people really exist. So I realized that how important it is to make understanding between others and us.

So, what does racism have to do with the 2008 Olympics? As I have mentioned, it’s a chance. But it isn’t just a chance for us to go and show others our culture. It’s a chance for us to go and show some people who we really are, it’s a chance for us to go and show some people that if they can do it, we can do it, too. It’s a chance to let them change their view about us forever, and then they will know that no matter what race you are we are all the same, no race is more better than the other in any field. But this chance only comes for once in a lifetime; let’s not waste it. I don’t think anyone wants to wait for another fifty years; the future is now. So don’t stand there and wait, you have to run to it. Maybe things will happen during this marathon, but one thing is for sure, we will all make it. So let’s not lose faith.

H: As we just said that for the consistency of the judgment of the judge panel, after all the first 3 contestants have finished. Our judges will have a short discussion about their marks. So now we’d like to ask our judges to leave for a while for discussion.

OK, a few minutes ago, the first 3 contestants have finished their job in speech’s contest. And the judges had a short discussion about their marks. Now our judges had reached agreement and they are coming back. Welcome back!

And also let’s welcome back the first 3 contestants onto the stage.

So, Pro. Gong, have you reached any agreement on their marks?

J: Well, yes, basically agreement. Roughly we are almost the same.

H: OK. So please score for the first 3 contestants from contestant number 1 to number 3.

H: now let’s give the floor to contestant number 4 YU LI.

C: On the day of my departure at the railway station, when the train began heading north, I caught sight of the silhouette of my grandpa swaggering away homebound. His voice echoed, reassuringly: “Boy, cheer up, show your best to the world!”

Grandpa had been a constant figure in my childhood, much more available than my office-bound parents. He was there to see me grow up, caring and nurturing me.

I used to be a shy boy, taciturn and self-isolated in my books. Little had I imagined that I’d be facing this kind of English contest some day. When I was 7 years old, my elementary school once held a biennial poem recitation contest. As you could have imagined, I balked at the idea of partaking in. I dreaded the thought of delivering a mini-speech in front of a horde of people, with din and pandemonium in the school auditorium. To make it worse, the silly extravaganza was likely to be spoiled by those parents seemingly sneering at childish voices, making fun of our innocence and naivet岢. Alex, what a holy shame to get involved. Nevertheless, grandpa insisted that I should join in, with his reassuring voice he went: “Boy, don’t take yourself seriously, come on and show your best!” Eventually, I did it and succeeded.

As my grandpa always said, life is full of joy and challenges with challenges predominating, that I shall never panic and lose sight of my priorities in face of it, rather to adhere to my principals of hard work, perseverance and self-confidence. Thus now I look forward to challenges rather than shying away from them and I value the determination that guided me through the struggles.

Thanks to his sustained support, I made my way here. Though the challenge ahead is tough, I can still believe this gentle old man: “Oh yes, cheer up, SHOW MY BEST TO THE WORLD.”

H: So please enter your score for contestant number 4.

And the next one is contestant number 5.

C: After I read the books of Harry Potter,I am greatly touched by the fantastic magic world. How I wish if I could have a magic-stick just like Harry to make all my wishes come true!

If I have a magic-stick,I’ll make President Bush stop the war on Iraq. I don’t think it’s a rightful war, because America neither care about UN,nor other countries’complaining, and started the war all by itself! From the news,we all know clearly, that a lot of citizens of Iraq died or hurted seriously. I feel very sorry to see that. If I can stop every war in the world with my magic-stick,I believe the whole earth will be a paradise for everyone else.

If I have a magic-stick,I will build a new school building for all my schoolmates. As the building is built by itself and it’ll finish in one night,we don’t need to move to other schools,we don’t need to spend any time or money on it. It’ll be very quiet and without any pollution. It’ll have the greatest facilities in it. If I have a magic-stick,I will design a new kind of uniform for all the students In summer, when it’s very hot,the uniform will spray some small drops of cool water on your legs and arms. In winter,it’ll get thicker with the temperature. You even don’t have to wear sweaters, only this uniform can make you feel that the spring is here right now! When it rains or snows,it can shelter your uniform getting wet. When it’s windy,it can shelter your eyes from sandstorms, too. And we girls will like it a lot, because it’ll keep us away from the sunburn!

If I have a magic-stick,I will go back to the past to learn more about history,I’ll travel around the world to revise my store of knowledge. I’ll protect our environment and the wild animals…

If I have a magic-stick,I want to do so many things. Although I can never have one,I still want to tell everybody, sooner or later, all my dreams will be done!Because at the time,my hands will be the magic-sticks! Believe me!I can!

H: I’m sorry. Time is up. I have to interrupt you.

Let’s see how the judges will evaluate your performance in this round.

H: OK. The next speaker is contestant number 6.

  C: “The Dream We Have”

Some days ago, I saw a picture in a newspaper. In the picture is a frightened girl. The four-year-old girl has just become motherless and homeless, and is lying in the arms of a doctor. Her pink clothes are bloodied and her hollow eyes are staring at something only she can see.

People can always see images like this on TV. We see little children begging food and water from soldiers. We see dead bodies of common people deserted in the dust of bombing. We see heavy smoke rising from the burning cities, covering the solid blue sky. Every time we see these sad scenes, the only word that bursts out of our heart is “Peace, peace, peace!” But where on earth is the real sweet peace?

Actually, peace has always been the most beautiful wish of all the humans on the globe, but when we look back on the human civilization, there are millions of war nightmares flashing before our eyes—tears in mothers` eyes, birds standing on burnt logs, cameras in dead journalists` hands, wastelands after inhumane killings. Faced with all these terrible sights, our hearts are weeping. We are wondering why killings are found everywhere when we know peace is our desire. We are wondering why we can’t bring an end to wars which are making us suffer. We are wondering why we have to destroy our only home instead of making efforts to decorate it. Maybe we haven’t found the answers to these questions, but we’ll try to pursue them. Maybe peace is still far away, but we still hold strong belief in it.

We have a dream that one day the sky will no longer be covered with the clouds of bombing, so that white doves can fly freely.

We have a dream that one day the earth will never cry, and the world will be full of the fragrance of flowers.

We have a dream that one day all the people in the world, no matter they are white or black, yellow or red can join their hands together like brothers and sisters.

We have a dream that one day there will be true harmony of humans and animals, without famine, without diseases, without pollution, without conflicts and without killings.

Just as a famous song goes, “Heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me, and for the entire human race.”

H: OK. Now the first 6 contestants have finished their speeches. And if you want to know their ranks in this round, we’ll be back soon.

Good evening! Welcome back to CCTV 4th annual star of outlook English talent competition. And you are watching the teenagers’ semi-final.

In today’s competition, all the 14 contestants are fighting for to be in the final. And now the first 6 contestants have finished their speeches. And let’s take a look at the scoreboard for their ranks and marks.

And here we still got 8 more contestants to continue the competition. Next, let’s have a look at contestant number 7’s personal information.

OK, now let’s welcome contestant number 7. So you really like music very much?

  C: I hope so.

H: Yes, so are you talking about music?

C: My topic today: Bring Chinese music to the world

I’m sure all of you would still remember the Chinese traditional music performance in Vienna Golden Concert Hall. That night, spectators were all entranced by the undulating rhythm, the entire hall was flooded by long time applause. It’s a time to be proud of not only by the Chinese music world but also the whole nation where the music was nurtured.

For decades, we are constantly concerned about lots of questions. Can national music permeate into more foreign lands? Can the fancy melody fuse with more foreign races? And can the profound culture grow into prosperity in more foreign countries?

People often say: What belongs to one nation becomes universal. As a treasure of our ancient culture, traditional music reflects this wise saying. In China, the famous music can be cherished deeply in every Chinese’s heart; in foreign countries, it arouses the nostalgia of the overseas Chinese; in the whole world, it can one day inspire resonance between people with different skins and languages.

Look at the enthusiastic and persevering warriors who dedicated themselves to bring Chinese music to the world, I have a dynamic impulse to join them immediately.

Please believe me, my friends. I will exert my utmost strength for it.

Please walk by my side, my friends. Let’s strive together for the bright and glorious future of Chinese traditional music in the world!

  Thanks for your attention!

H: OK, now our judges will mark for contestant number 7’s speech.

Thank you! The next speaker is contestant number 8.

C: My topic today is Friends

I remember when I was younger, my grandmother used to tell me many stories. Today I would like to share with you one of my favorites.

Once, there lived a young boy. He was very sad because he couldn’t keep his friends. One day he asked his father why this was so. His father only replied: “Son, each time you say or do something that hurts one of your friends, hammer a piece of wood into the ground.” The curious boy did as he was told and soon he had made a fence out of the wood.

“Father!” he cried, “ I can’t get out! I am blocked by this fence! ”

“Well, son, each time you say something nice to a friend, you can take one piece of wood out.” The boy did this, too. On the first day he took out one piece of wood and on the second day he took out another two. On the third day he took out some more. Finally he had removed all of the wood. “But Father!” he cried again, “ Look at the holes in the ground! They are big and dark! Oh, how ugly!” “Son,” his father said, “ This is why you aren’t able to keep your friends. Remember: when you hurt someone’s feelings, no matter what you do to make up for it, there will always be a scar in their heart. ”

From that day on, this young boy was always very careful of his words and actions and he never hurt his friends’ feelings again. To this day, I always keep this story close to my heart. It has taught me a lot. I as always careful not to hurt any of my friends because they are people that I wouldn’t want to lose.

H: OK, thank you so much.

OK now the judges please enter your scores for contestant number 8.

H: And next one is contestant number 9.

C: Different people might take different views upon opportunity. Some people regard opportunity a rare thing that is difficult to get. But other people think that every one has some kind of opportunities from time to time. As for me, I prefer the latter opinion. A western saying tells us, “Every dog has its day.” Everybody has opportunities to be successful. In fact, no one can be denied by opportunities. Those who claim they don’t have good luck just can’t recognize or make good use of opportunity. So we must try our best to find it and make best use of it. Opportunities are not windfalls. Opportunities belong to those who are prepared and qualified. For example, before Newton, many people had seen an apple falling down from a tree, but only Newton discovered the Law of Gravity. The reason is that he had developed a habit of thinking over answers to problems and stuck to his studies in spite of difficulties.

As we all know, China is a country with a large number of young people. We are compared to the rising sun, giving youth, energy and new blood to our nation. So we must try to live up to the expectations of our motherland by squarely facing and taking every opportunity we meet in order to make the most worthwhile contribution we can to the world as well as our motherland.

Yes, opportunities are coming. With our talents and with our wits, with our courage and with our creativity, let us whisper, loudly in our minds: Let it come! Let it come!

  Thank you!

H: Thank you for your wonderful speech! So the judges will enter their scores for contestant number 9. Let’s take a look.

H: Welcome back! This is the 4th annual star of outlook English talent competition. And you are watching the teenagers’ semi-final. And sitting here is Pro. Teng. And I got some questions for Pro.Teng. Hello, Pro.Teng, we know that in many contests, speech is always an important part. What do you think that we can test about?

J: In speech making, let me just make my first point. One thing that I think that we have to remind ourselves constantly is that when you are making a public speech, you are performing in the public. And when you perform in the public, you are supposed to be communicating with the audience and with the judges. At this point, I would say that content may not be that important. I think public speech making is all about public communicating. And for example, you need to have a little bit eye contact with the judges or with the audience. And the other thing I’d like to mention at this point is intonation. And that has to do with voice. I mean voice is also very important in telling who you are and what you are going to say, or what kind of personality you have. And there are lots of elements actually related to voice in public speech making. And one thing that I’d like to say is that always speak very loud, clearly and slowly. Do not make yourself so hasty and speak that fast. Be clear and actually be good grammar. Do not make grammar mistakes. So it’s basically test of your comprehensive capability and ability to make your speech. The other thing I also want to make as a point is that when you make a speech, the content is also important. And make it person. Try to tell a personal story. You actually shorten the distance between you and also the audience.

H: Yes, and for speech, we have different kinds of speeches: prepared one just like we had now, and impromptu one. For the prepared speech is called prepared one that means you can prepare something before you start. And I know that many of the contestants wrote about their stories. Do you think it’s a better way to recite from memories or just do free speech?

J: Well, recitation is necessary. But, I don’t think recitation is the key to seize success. In fact I think one of the most important thing in making a prepared speech is that make preparation before coming into the contest but then present the speech in a natural way. Be slow and be clear and actually use all the resources you have. So do not make yourself wooden. Try to make the best of you by presenting you naturally. I mean basically in a natural way.

H: OK. Thanks for the advice. Now let’s continue the competition.

OK. Thank you! Let’s go on with the competition. The next one to show up is contestant number 10. What’s your topic of today?

C: My topic today is smile

First I’d like to ask you a question: Do you think the war in Iraq could be solved in another way? I cannot remember how old I was when I heard this story for the first and only time.

Once there was a king, who didn’t like his infant daughter and wanted to get rid of her. So he asked a strong knight to kill her. The knight took the baby into the forest and lifted his sword, as the sword was going to come down, he saw a sweet smile on the baby's little face, the knight's arms couldn't drop, his braveness crumbled before the baby’s smile. Beyond all doubt, this is the power of a smile. Actually, a smile is the best weapon in the world.

But during the war in Iraq, I couldn't see a single smile on any of the role players' faces.

Last year 287 000 Chinese committed suicide because of stress. Research shows, that a smile every hour, gives people immediate relief and reduces stress by 70 %. It opens our minds to think clearly.

I want to conclude with the famous saying: "A smile converts problems into challenges".

I hope by sharing my speech with you, will give you more understanding of the value of love and life. Please remember this important point:

A smile is the cutest facial expression of all. It can show your friendliness, it can raise your confidence, and it can change embarrassment into harmony.

H: OK. Now the judges, we can see all of them are smiling. And let’s see if the result is really pleasant.

H: And next we’ll move to contestant number 11.

So it seems you have a lot of supporters down there. So that makes you more confident?

C: Well, that makes me excited.

C: My topic is about my best friend. Most reliable friend, never forgotten!

I never thought anyone of the same age of me could be more special than me until a half-year-younger girl came into my life three years ago.

Once in this term I met her in the English corner and both of us were so excited because we had not seen each other for so long since the day we were distributed into different classes at the beginning of out senior year. She looked me in the eye and said, “Suzy, since the day we were not in the same class, I’ve been feeling lost, but what's more, I can definitely feel that you have left something in my mind or body that my new classmates who know you said I was so much like you!” I smiled, feeling so touched inside and suddenly a word jumped into my mind “permeate”. Yes, we permeated each other because I felt the same way as her.

Lynda, the girl, my best friend, would like to call me the most reliable friend and I would, too. We were in the same class in junior school and we shared the same room with six other girls. To tell you the truth, I didn’t like her at all first because of her boyish manners, hardly ever making the bed, never cleaning the dormitory, and she was less talkative than anyone of us in our dormitory---totally special. Maybe this kind of personality never appeared in my life so I felt uncomfortable quite a bit. But when I began to talk to her, I thought it was a wonderful beginning because if I hadn’t talk to her I would lose the most valuable friend in my life. Actually, she was optimistical and rakish and that’s why she was boyish, and it was her boyish way of thinking, that our friendship remained long with no quarrels. I mean, the longer I was with her, the more I behaved smartly like a boy.

People’s mind changes, but friendship will last forever. The hard school life occupies most of our time and we seem to be kept away from each other though we are in the same Grade. But distance makes beauty, when we see each other and say such simple worlds like “What’s up”, “Catch you later”,“ Don’t forget to call me”… make both of us feel warm and satisfied.

  Thanks!

H: Now we are waiting for the marks for you.

OK. The next contestant is contestant number 12.

  What does that mean?

C: More applause! Just for kidding! I have a suggestion. To tell the truth, I didn’t eat much for my breakfast this morning. Because I feel I’m so nervous. Now I feel a little bit hungry.

  H: What’s the suggestion?

C: So it might be a good idea for me to get off the stage immediately right after my speech part and the judgment. That’s my suggestion.

H: Is that your way to give up or is that your way to persuade the judges to give you a high mark?

  C: Just for kidding!

  H: So what’s your topic?

C: My topic is facing applause correctly

Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Today I’m very glad to be here to share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of an attitude towards life----facing applause correctly.

There was a philosopher who once said that applause is one of the most wonderful extras in life. I personally couldn’t agree more. Applause gives us the power which enables us to show our talents in competitions. It is a cluster of exuberant flowers which continues to bloom time and time again on one’s road to success; it is the propelling force which pushes one forward on and on through everything. If one becomes successful in a certain field of study, applause will make him much happier, telling him to keep up the good work and make better progress. If one fails to do something, applause will give him enough courage to get over it, helping him to have more confidence and never say die. It is difficult to imagine what the world would be like if no applause existed. Everything would turn out to be lacking in energy and everyone would turn out without passion. Applause is the sun; it brightly warms every corner of the earth and offers us enthusiasm to conquer every difficulty. However, too much sunshine can make plants fade and give us sunburns. Applause is a well; it unselfishly feeds the thirsty grass and also clears our troubled minds. However, too much water may wash away all of our houses and destroy our homestead. Applause is a breeze; it gently touches creatures all over the world and calms our nerves when we get anxious. However, too much wind will stir up the ocean and cause a huge disaster.

All in all, different people may have different reactions to applause, and these may even be opposite sometimes. Therefore, face applause correctly. And then, success can be achieved by him, her, you and I.

  Thank you, everyone!

H: Next we’ll give the floor to contestant number13.

C: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

I’m Marcus Doo, a boy from Wuhu. First of all, I must say standing here makes me feel really honored and excited. Maybe you can guess what has brought me to this spot. My English journey started when I began to utter English words as a toddler;. Later, New Concept English cultivated in me a genuine passion for English. And furthermore, Li Yang Crazy English convinced me that it’s my destiny to pursue English learning all my life. I mean, English has opened up a new world to me and English means everything to me.

April 3rd is the date I’ll never forget. On that day I received the call from CCTV, informing me that I was admitted to the National Final. That news came out of the blue, I couldn’t believe my ears, my mind went blank, my head swirled and I felt as if I was in a dream. Shortly after that, when I calmed down, I began to realize this competition is not my final goal, but a new starting point.

Today, we are gathering here to compete for the highest mark. All the contestants present are so outstanding that it is a real challenge for me to come out top, at the same time, I’ve got the fine chance to learn from their experience and acquire fresh knowledge. And most important of all, I have the honor to hear the comments given by our respectable judges. All this will certainly give a good push to my English study. Newton once said, “If I have seen further than most men, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” So far I’ve become fully confident of myself simply because I’m standing at a new and high starting point. Setting off from this point, I’ll fulfill my colorful dreams. Maybe several years later, there will be a young man sitting on this judge’s seat and his name will be Marcus Doo. I hope that day will come soon.

  Thanks for listening!

H: If I give you 10 more seconds, what do you want to say to the audience and the judges?

C: I want to say thank you for being here and thank you for supporting me so much. Also I want to thank other contestants for supporting me and give encouragement to me.

H: OK, so that’s always the right thing to say. Now the judges will enter the score for contestant number 13.

H: OK. Here we still got one more contestant for the speech.

What will be your topic of today’s speech?

C: Well, my topic today is Midsummer nice dream in Cambridge

H: In Cambridge? So we are all familiar with Shakespeare’s Midsummer nice dream, so how come you have a different topic at Cambridge?

C: I went there last summer vacation. So all the local people and social mold have given me wonderful memory. So I decided to write down my experience and my true feeling about that.

H: OK, so let’s hear that. You can start now.

C: People often think of Cambridge as a diamond on an imperial crown, which means it is a world-famous seat of academic authority. In the summer vacation of 2002, I luckily had an opportunity to visit Cambridge. When I finally reached her, Cambridge welcomed me in her particular approachable way. Besides the imposing buildings of the universities, the honest and warm local people also gave me wonderful memories. Here I have a story to tell you.

During my stay in Cambridge there was a traditional festival in memory of William Shakespeare .I decided to go to the Girton College to enjoy the famous play: “Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

The open-air performance took place in the Collage Yard. The actors’ lively performance made me immediately involved. But unexpectedly, it started to rain, and what was worse, I forgot to take my umbrella. On the stage, the actors just kept performing, regardless of the heavy rain. However, I was annoyed and ready to leave. Then an old lady lent her raincoat to me and said with a kind smile: ‘never mind, child. One umbrella is enough for my husband and I. I was deeply moved by the dedicated actors and the warm—hearted.

I think that the true love between people is beyond nationalities. It can build a bridge between people of different nations and colors of skin. I believe that the whole world is a family. And at that moment, I just immersed myself in the fragrant atmosphere that was as sweet as a midsummer night’s dream.

  Thank you!

H: Welcome back to the national final of CCTV 4th annual of star of outlook English talent competition. And now you are in the teenagers’ semi-final.

And just now we’ve finished the first part: prepared speech. And the 14 contestants did a good job.

Yes, they think about a lot of things. The topic range from friendship, music, peace, everything.

Yes, they thought the world. They are really thought provoking. And we know about their marks but it’s still too early to say who will be the winner.

OK, we’ll continue the competition. And now comes the second part: question and answer.

Now let’s welcome the 2 question masters Ms Marijane Elliot, and Mr. Tom W. OK, our judges are ready and I’m sure the contestants are ready, too. Now let’s welcome back the first contestant, contestant number 1.

Please get ready for the questions.

J: Hi! Your question is this: who is your idol? And if you could meet this person, what would you say to him or her?

C: Thank you for your question first. My idol is a TV program hostess. Her name is YangLan. And I really adore her, Because she has a lot of wisdom. You know, when I first saw her on the TV, it was just a big surprise! I always see very beautiful host on TV shows. But sometimes they do not have so much wisdom. And if I have a chance to meet YangLan, I just want to say to her. I was so admire you, and I want to be your friend. And if I could be her friend, which is a great honor to me, I will really learn a lot from her. I want to be a TV host as her as well. So maybe still on her channel. Maybe in the future, I will be a TV hostess. I think I should try my best to be like her, maybe not better than her, but also want to be a TV host. And that’s my dream. Thank you!

H: OK, contestant number 1 dreams of becoming a TV person. And now the judges will enter their score for contestant number 1.

OK. Contestant number 1 has just talked about her idols. That’s YangLan, so any comments on her response to question master’s question? Any one of you would like to say a few words? So let’s start with Ms Allison, please!

J: I would just like to make a comment that I really feel that you have a strong present when public speaking. Great eye contact! Keep that on! That’s fantastic! I think you can work a little bit on your intonation and your pronunciation. Especially when using the “l” sound, which I know, is one of the hardest sounds to create. And I know it’s difficult because you have to speak very quickly. But remember to speak clearly. Fantastic job, though, overall. Great job!

  H: Let’s welcome back contestant number 2.

J: Hello! My question for you is where are you from? What time do you think is the best time to travel there?

C: I come from NanJing. You know, it’s a very ancient city in China. And I think the best time to travel to NanJing is in spring. NanJing is a city in south. And there are lots of trees planted in both sides of the streets and some flowers are also grown just under the trees. In spring, a lot of birds will also come back and sang some beautiful songs. And you know lakes are used to freeze in winter and now it changed into water again. Do you know XuanWu lake? It's a very famous lake. I think XuanWu lake in spring is also very beautiful, just like a mirror. It used to be dirty, but now it’s very beautiful. So I think the most beautiful time in NanJing is spring. Thank you! Welcome! Welcome to NanJing.

H: Now the judges please enter your score for contestant number 2. And later one of the judges will make some comments. OK, Mr.Teng?

J: I think what I appreciate from your presentation is that you’ve been very well in presenting yourself. Not only use the skills, but also involving several advises in terms of communicating. For example you’ve been asking questions. Not only for yourself but also asking questions to the judges. That was very good communication. Thank you! Wonderful job!

H: The next one to answer the questions from our question masters is contestant number 3.

J: Hi! This question is about your 18th birthday. That’s a long time away from you. But the question is how would you like to spend your 18th birthday?

C: Because when I’m going to be 18 years old, it’s the year 2008. And that’s the year Beijing is going to hold its summer Olympic Games, right? So, I guess the best way to spend it would be a big birthday party at the stadium. And I can meet all those stars that I dreamed. Maybe I can meet, let’s say, Vince Carter for basketball. That would be a best way. And the best present would be they will give me a job to volunteer for the Olympic Games. That’s what I want to spend my birthday. Thank you!

H: You still have time, do you wanna say something else?

  C: Well, I think that’s pretty much!

H: Maybe you could invite all of us?

C: Yes, of course! Definitely! This is a big thing for my whole life. You guys can go definitely. I welcome you!

H: Thank you! So please enter your scores for contestant number 3.

So Ms Dian C, would you make some comments?

J: Thank you. My suggestion to you is to maintain a formal approach to your speech. OK? Now, you’re natural style today. Very charming and very affective. But today you’re absolutely charming and you’ve done a wonderful job.

H: Welcome back to CCTV 4th annual star of outlook English talent competition teenagers’ semi-final. Just now the 2question masters asked the first 3 contestants a couple of questions and now I will be the question master and I have some questions for our audience. So, in the first round, you’ve watched the 14 contestants’ performance. What do you think? Would you share some of your opinions with us?

Audience: OK. Now today we’re very happy and excited. Because contestant number 8 got the first in the first round who is from our school. Of course the other contestants did well, too. So, we are very happy and excited. And also we’re very astonished. Because today all the contestants are teenagers. But their English are wonderful. So as a teacher of English, I feel to be challenged. Yes, and what I should do I think is to make my English class more enjoyable, more active, more interesting. To make my students in their English learning and learn English well. Thank you!

H: OK, that’s a remark from the teacher. And we also have some lovely boy and girls here. And I believe the questions just now raised to the first 3 contestants are interesting. What do you think? Would you like to answer one of these questions? So where are you from? Why not introduce yourself?

Audience: Actually I’m from Beijing. I’m a contestant. And also those contestants are really really good. Wonderful! They did really good job! I’m really glad to meet them. And also, I only want to say one thing is for this part, I think they should use all the time. They shouldn’t wait or the other guy will get a high score. That’s it! I hope everybody is lucky! Good luck!

H: And thank you very much. And now, let’s just go back to the competition. Because the next 3 contestants are ready.

Yes, thanks! Next one will come back, contestant number 4.

J: Good. Now this question I have for you is very important because many of us here are teachers. So the question is this. How do you celebrate teacher’s day with your teacher?

C: First I have to say that I have a very good teacher. She is very good to me. I’ve learned a lot. She is my English teacher. She didn’t just teach me English. She teaches me the principle I have to follow in my life. Her famous words is----I’m very much like speak his famous words at this celebration, because he has always telling that----life is full of joy and challenges dominating. But I shall never panic and lose sight of my priority in face of it. Well on that day I’m always come into her house, meet with him, make our little celebrations at his round table. And I like to have some chat with her because she’s very busy doing with her works. I don’t have much extravagant things for her. But I have to say that I want to celebrate with her on a very small-scale.

H: So please enter your scores for contestant number 4. So Pro.Vheng, would you please say a few words about contestant number 4’s performance?

J: Yes, thank you. I’m really impressed by your speech. And you know the content is very important. And you start with an issue of your teacher. And then you shift to the holiday. Then you went to a house. It’s a very good strategy. And, so your teacher is a female, right? So, not “him”. Sometimes you say him, sometimes you say her. And I’m get confused. Anyway, pretty good. I appreciate your speech very much.

H: Now let’s move on to contestant number 5.

J: Hi! I’m going to ask a question about your name. Chinese names all have a meaning. So, this question is how would you describe your name? Try to describe your name.

C: OK. My Chinese name is Li Xiaomeng. Xiaomeng in Chinese is means a little plant. So I guess my parents want me to be a little plant. Just receive a lot of sunshine and to be a healthy girl. And to make myself to be beautiful and healthy. They want me to do this because I think they take a good care of me from I born until now. So I thank them very much. And also, Xiaomeng is a very good hope. I hope I can be a good girl in the future and to be a fashion designer. And I want to make everybody to be beautiful. So this is my dream. Thank you!

H: So dreams to be a big tree one-day from the little sprout. OK, now the judges will enter the scores for contestant number 5.

OK. Pro.Gong, would you like to make some comment?

J: Thank you for your answer. And I think your English is fluent. And you are clearly express yourself. Actually your name is given by your parents. So they have their thinking. And I would say that if you just concentrate on that is really good. But overall you’ve done a good job. Thank you!

H: Now let’s welcome back contestant number 6 Yangmao.

  J: Alright! Are you ready?

Now when you have conflicts between your study and your extracurricular activities, what do you do?

C: OK. When I have some conflicts with my learning and some after class activities. Frankly, I think I will just cut off some activities. And pay more attention to my learning. Because you know in China, it is very important for one student to get a good mark in the exam. Because the final exam. We must get through the final exam then we can enter a better college or university. So if I pay more attention to the activities, then I can’t spend much time on my learning. And then I will get a bad mark. Maybe I would fail in the exam. That’s all.

H: And next let’s wait for the score for contestant number 6. If the same question to contestant number 5 will raised to you. That would be very interesting. Because you have a very interesting Chinese name. So sometimes it does cause a lot of misunderstanding. OK now let’s hear the comments from Pro.Huang.

J: I’m totally agree with you that the only thing Chinese students are facing is competition. Because China enjoys the largest population in the world. But I have to remind you try to find a balance between learning and outside activity. Healthy is one of the most important thing in our life. Thank you!

H: The first 6 contestants finished their Q&A part. And later we’ll know about their ranks.

And you still got time and chance to guess who will be the winner because we have more competitions ahead. And the next one is contestant number 7.

  Let’s welcome him! Welcome back!

J: Hi! This question actually has 2 parts. So I’ll just read them both, and you can think about it. First one is: what is one thing about yourself that you really satisfied with? And the second part is: is there anything negative that comes with that?

  Are you ready?

C: I think the most thing I satisfy with myself is I’m very confident. And in any race, big or small, important or not, I’m always very confident when I’m standing on the stage. I think confident is the most important factor that players should have. Because if we are confident with ourselves, we won’t be afraid of anything. And if other players are very good too, we don’t be beaten by them at the first sight. Well, the thing I’m negative to myself is when I’m on a race, for example, I always get very busy and hasty. I’m too excited and wanted to be very good. So sometimes it will be the negative factor to me. That’s all.

  Thank you.

H: The judges, please enter your score for contestant number 7.

So Pro.Hou, would you make some comments on her response?

J: You said confidence is something you are happy about yourself. I think that is very good. And I can also see it. You are confident. But you can probably be a little bit more relaxed. Because your face has been tense when you say one thing I’m happy about myself is confidence. You should also show the expression to support the idea. Thank you.

H: So our judges are really particular to the details.

H: And next let’s give the floor to contestant number 8.

J: Good. Alright! This is one of the most fun questions for me to ask. If you advance into the finals, whom will you tell first and why?

C: If I were advanced into the finals, I think the first person I would tell is my mother. Because she has always been there for me. From I was just a very little girl, I remember her teaching me, always think before you react. And so on. I always remember that lesson. She taught me many other lessons, too. And my English was the most part was learned from her. She helped me with many things as well. When I was sad, she will always put me on her leg. She will help me until I stop crying. I remember when the first time she when to America, I was very sad and didn’t ant her to go, because she is my Mum. And I think my closest relationship is with her. I really thank her for what she did for me and what she taught me. I’m really thankful and grateful. And I just want her to know that I want to make her proud. And I think that she would be proud if I advanced into the finals. Thank you.

H: Judges, please enter your score for contestant number 8, first.

OK, Allison, would you make some comment?

J: Fantastic job! I think you have a very natural presence in front of a group of people. But I think one thing to focus on is answering the question directly. You did say, yes I would tell my mother. It’s easy to get sidetrack a little bit into talking about something else. And I think you did that. You were talking about you and your Mum’s relationships. So just to make sure to send on track with that. But overall, fantastic job and beautiful English!

H: Now let’s welcome the next one contestant number 9.

J: OK. This one is about young love. Are there many cases of young love in your school? That’s like teen-dating, you know? And what’s your opinion about this relationship? What do you think about it? You understand this question? OK!

C: OK. Indeed, in our days, especially high school, we do have some love affairs, which happens between teenagers. It seems that it’s inevitable. But when we think about this question that do we should have love affair when we are in high school? And the answer is clear. No, never. Because we haven’t realized what love is. And if we have get involved in the love affair, the thing that waiting for us is money, time, is responsibility, passion, something like that. So, in my opinion, I don’t agree that any of us, the guys like us to get involved in the love affairs. Because we have no time to do things like that. What we are waiting for is our study. In our school, our main business is study, is to make your own heart in study. Thank you!

H: I hope the sound wouldn’t be so nerve-wrack. OK. Now the judges will be working on the scores for contestant number 9. And now let’s hear from Pro.Teng again for comment.

J: I think it is a very controversial and very sensitive question. You’ve done a very good job in clarifying the issue centering around the phenomenon, which is prevailing here in China, particularly on campuses at the nation’s middle schools. One thing that I also like to help you is I think the choice of word seems to be quite problematic. I think it’s not love affairs. But I think it’s like we have set in the question, young love, right? It’s not about the so-called love affairs. Thank you!

H: Welcome back! You’re watching the 4th annual of star of outlook English talent competition. And this is teenagers’ semi-final. And here I got some questions first for Pro.Hou. Just now we had the Q&A part. And it’s just like an impromptu speech. And what do you think that in what way we can organize a good impromptu speech in a short prepared time?

J: Well, I’m not sure if I can give really significant advice on that. But my experience is that first of all, in an impromptu setting, you need to feel relaxed. Because when you are nervous, even if you are very witty, offstage, most of the time, on that particular moment, you may find yourself very very much at the end of your wit. So my suggestion is that be relaxed.

H: Now let’s continue the competition. Next one to show up is contestant number 10.

  Let’s welcome back!

J: Now, if you could be a head teacher in your class for only one day, how would you manage your class?

C: OK. First I want to say that I’m not really sure that everyone of the audience has heard the questions clearly. So for your better understanding of myself, first I repeat the question. The question is if I had the chance to be a head teacher of my class for one day. What will I do? I think there are two things that I have to do. First one is try to contact more with my students. We love the teacher that can contact with us more emotionally or mentally. I heard that a teacher he always talks to his students on the Internet. From this way to know what they are thinking. I think this is really a good way for teacher’s understanding of the students. And the second thing I want to do is if I have class of my students that I will show to the public, I won’t practice it in advance. I think it’s really an ugly thing for teacher. I won’t do that. And these are the two things I would do if I were a head teacher of my class for one day. Thank you!

H: Now please enter your score for contestant number 10. So Pro.Cheng, any comments on her response? Dian, please? It’s your turn!

J: First of all, let me say, you look lovely, very professional. And that makes a difference.

From a judge’s perspective, I think it makes a difference. You gave a good answer. I like the fact that you repeat the question although it was a bit wordy leading up to it. Be careful of unnecessary words. Also, flow of speech, English is a flowing speech. Allow the words to be connected and to stretch the vows a little bit for a more connected sound, more flowing. Word choice, just let me correct one thing in your phrasing. The word “contact”. “To have more contact with the students”, the phrase should be “to contact more”. But let me say you did a wonderful job!

H: And next let’s welcome contestant number 11.

J: OK. Here it is. A lot of students use weekends and holidays to take different workshops, like training classes and different kinds of courses at weekends and holiday. And I wanna know what do you think about this? What’s your opinion about that?

C: Yes, first I wanna make sure one thing that I met, when I was in the United States, when I was having a Chinese-US students exchange program, there I download a document which is about Chinese super kids. And it is written by an American writer. And he said that Chinese kids are so excellent because they have extra classes at the weekends. They work hard from Monday to Friday. It seemed that they use all their time to study. It just like they never stop studying and they are going to do very well in the future and help their country. And the writer seems to be very much agreeing with the kids there. But actually I don’t agree with this. Because some students don’t really want extra classes, the teacher gave them. Some of them really want to have it just because they want to get a high mark. So all I wanna say is that it depends on yourself. And I think that they should have a rest. So that’s it! Thanks!

H: Thank you! OK, we’ll wait to see the scores you got. And Pro.Cheng, please make some comment.

J: You are really lovely girl. And you have a kind of talent with English language. I’m really impressed by you when you were speaking and your manners. But in Q&A this part, I don’t think it’s a good strategy by starting with a contrary example. You’re oppressed by time. I don’t think you have fully expressed your ideas. So if you have a chance to go to the final, I hope you can pay a little attention on it. OK.

H: And next is contestant number 12.

J: The question is this: Do you like to play computer games? And the other part of the question is this: Do you think it’s good for a middle school student to spend s lot of time playing computer games?

C: Firstly, I have to happily admit that I love computer games. But, as for a middle school student, I don’t think it’s a good idea to play computer games all the time. Because we are right at a very important period of time, probably in our lifetime. Because the condition of education in China is so tough for us, especially us high school students or even junior middle school students. So spending too much time on playing computer games is not a good idea. It can waste most of our time, such as good time for studying or doing homework. All in all, I don’t think it’s a good idea to keep on playing computer games during this very important period of time. Thank you!

H: Thank you very much for your response. And now the judges will score for your response. So, Pro.Gong, please say a few words.

J: Thank you for your great answer. You know that it’s not easy to answer such a controversial issue question in 10 seconds. Your idea is very well organized. My only suggestion maybe next time you can be more formal and dress up. It seems you are too casual. Thank you!

H: Good evening! You are watching the 4th annual of star of outlook English talent competition. And this is teenagers’ semi-final. We re in the 2nd part, Q&A.

So on tonight’s competition, the 14 contestants will be competing for the 9 vacancies of the final. And just now, from contestant number1 to 12 have answered the questions from our 2 question masters. And who has done a better job? Let’s check it out on the scoreboard for their scores and ranks.

H: OK. Now, let’s go on with the competition. And, the next one is contestant number 13

J: Hi! What do you think about students to bring mobile phone to school?

C: I think it’s right for the students to take mobile phone to school. Because we students need to communicate with this advanced technology like phone. And it is not bad for our studies. And I think there are mobile phone games on the mobile phone. But if we students can control ourselves, they will not play the games. And it’s not bad for our students. Thank you.

H: So now please enter your scores. So, Pro.Huang, any comments on his response?

J: When you answer a question, think of the question first. It is very negative to bring mobile phone to a classroom. Sometimes, development of science technology makes our life more and more inhuman, although mobile phone try to communicate with each other. But if you bring the mobile phone in a very improper way, use it not correctly, the result will be very impolite! OK, thank you!

H: And next, the last contestant for this round, contestant number 14.

J: The question is this: what some problems will teenagers face while growing up?

C: OK. I think as a teenager in the 21st century, we indeed have many problems to face to. So, the first point is we are all under a lot of pressures every moment. And now, education is one of great significant of the entire nation. It not only provides you with good job today, but also gives you a better life. So, the first thing we should do is to receive the education. Many students hate it. Many students think it just a heavy pressure on them. So I think we should face to the problem. Because, anyway, pressure benefits study. So we should see the advantages for the examinations. Thank you!

H: Now the judges will be working on the last score for contestant number 14. So, Pro.Hou, some comment, please?

J: OK. First of all, I’d like to say that you have a very lovely smile. I also need to say a little bit. You basically focused on pressure that teenagers have at school. And at the end of your speech, you turning into that advantage. You can also learn something from these troubles. This leaves people confused. They don’t know exactly whether you are positive about the trouble or whether you are taking the negative attitude towards the trouble.

H: OK. Now, all the 14 contestants have finished their performance in the 2nd round. But I have one more question for you! So what do you think is the most important thing when facing the questions like this. I mean, when you have to give a response almost immediately.

Well, I’ve got some clues from the judges’ advice. Calmness. Yes, because you have to noticed that this is a nervous competition. And I know that all of our contestants have tried their best to be calm, when they try to gather thoughts in such a short time. And I know this competition will turn you on! But please keep calm and cool at this moment, because later we’ll tell you the ranks.

H: OK. So that’s the 2nd round, and we’ll be back with the 3rd round. So don’t go away!

  第三輪

H: Good evening and welcome back to CCTV 4th annual of star of outlook English talent competition. And this is the teenagers’ semi-final.

Now let’s start the 3rd round and also the last round of today’s competition: media segment. We have divided 14 contestants into 5 groups. So, 2 or 3 of them will have the same topic. But when one is having the competition, the other one or two won’t listen to the video clip.

Yes, they will have headsets. So now, Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s welcome back the first 3 contestants, contestant number 1,2,3. OK, welcome back! So contestant number 1 will be the first one to watch the video clip. And contestant number 2 and number 3 have seated already. And we have prepared headsets for them. OK, they’ve got the headsets. So tell us what’s in the headphone?

  C: Loud music!

H: Music! Let me try! OK, it’s very loud! I said it’s definitely right! That’s what you are supposed to do. So put on your headsets! Don’t dance! OK? It’s music, I know! Now contestant number 1 is ready. So are you ready for the video clip? OK, turn back and select a number from the big screen.

Number 3. So it will be all of you, you three’s choice. So let’s see what number 3 represents. H: OK, so that’s the first video clip. 10 seconds to think about that first. And after that, you

should first tell us what you have seen and then describe what will happen next. Using your own imagination, OK? 10 seconds.

C: OK, I saw a man. He broke an egg and then he put it in the container. Then he adds some milk in it. And he mixed it up. I think that he was going to bake a birthday cake for her daughter. Maybe it’s his daughter’s birthday and he wants to give her daughter a big birthday party. And he wants to give his daughter a big surprise. Because he has never made any meals for his daughter. Always the daughter’s mother cooks the dinner. So he really wants to give her daughter a big surprise by cooking the birthday cake for her. So he really tried hard and he thought the ways. So he was trying to bake a cake for her daughter’s birthday. And we can see that this father really cares about his daughter and really loves her daughter. Thank you!

H: So that’s the first version of story. Thank you very much. Exchange your seats with number 2. You can take the headset.

OK, number 2, it’s your turn. Come over here. So do you need some time to recover?

C: You can just start now. But the music is really very loud.

H: OK, now keep you eye on the screen in front of you. Yes we’ll show you the video clip. Are you ready? Here we go.

OK, that’s it. You got 10 seconds to think about your description as well as your development of the story.

  You can start.

C: Yes. On the video clip I can see a cup. A man first put an egg in the cup and then put some milk in it. Then he does some shake to make it become liquid, which has the color of yellow. And I think that might be a new kind of pudding. I like eating pudding very much. And I think this new kind of pudding will be sold in the super market all over the country. All of the children like it. And it will be a very successful product. Thank you!

  H: That’s really imaginative.

So you take the seat of contestant number 3. OK, it’s your turn.

  Are you OK now?

  C: Yes, I’m fine.

H: That’s good. Watch the video clip. That’s it! You’ve got 10 seconds to think about the description and then what happens next.

C: We can see this person is breaking an egg. And he is putting what in the egg into a bottle. And he is mixing it with milk. Then he put it in a big big ball. He’s still mixed it up. I think we got milk shakes sold in McDonalds. I think he is making an egg shake which may be a new kind of food. But I think it’s possible. Yes, that’s pretty much all. Thank you very much.

H: Thank you! OK. contestant number 1 and 2? Come over here to the center of the stage. First please enter your scores first for contestant number 1. And we’d like to invite one of the judges to comment on their versions of the story. So, how about Tom?

J: All right! For the first version of the story, I very much like the idea of the cake. I would mention however to focus on the difference on “his” or “her”. Because you mentioned it was a father making a cake for his daughter. You can’t mention a “her” regard to a father. So make sure to keep that in mind to be all the distinction more often when to use “his” and when to use “her”. And in regard to the pudding. It was nice. I like the way you present this. I would say just in general try to let your flown English go a little more smoothly. There is little choppy of points. I mean a little bit stop and start occasionally. But you use the oral language great. I can’t wait to see how would it improves from here. As for the 3rd one regard to the shakes. I love the egg shake. I thought that was really cute, very smart and witty. I would encourage you to take a little more time in your thought process to drive your explanation or to play of it more. I’d say think of a way to cooperate a little bit more into them. Overall, very good job! Congratulations!

H: So what is the man in the video clip doing? Let’s check it out on the big screen.

So, it is artificial pearl. A surprise, right?

OK. Thank you very much for your stories. That’s really wonderful!

Now let’s welcome the next group, the next 3 contestants: from contestant number 4 to 6.

So number 4 will be the first one, the first storyteller. So, go behind the desk.

And other two take the seats and put on your headsets. Please select a number.

Do you think you need a discussion on which number you choose?

C: We already had a discussion.

On behalf of the team, I choose number 6.

H: OK, that’s it. You got 10 seconds to think about it. That’s really challenging! 10 seconds!

OK, time is up! And first tell us what you have seen and then develop the story.

C: As everybody has seen on the screen, there are many people taking the budgets and joining a competition. I think this is a kind of competition, competing for the depth they get in the mud. The deeper the competitor get, the more impressed the judges will be. So they are competing for who will be the one that will cross deepest into the mud. I think this is very interesting, because there are so many Japanese people in this mud. I think the Japanese government is now promoting this kind of competition. Because they think they have to find a more interesting approach for the overall nation to get some exercise among their people. So I think maybe Chinese government will follow this way.

H: OK. You can change with contestant number 5.

It’s your turn. Are you ready?

  OK, look at the screen.

What are they doing? You got 10 seconds to think about that?

C: OK, well, there is a beach. That’s not a usual beach. They are having a training. Their teacher wants them to swim across a lake. But that lake is full of dirt. They want to swim across it, because this training is very important for them. It’s in their summer camping. They are having this training for challenging themselves. Next, they are going to swim across it to another bank of the lake and to challenge themselves in this competition.

H: OK, so now you can exchange with contestant number 6. OK, please get ready for the video clip and later we’ll listen to your version. You have 10 seconds.

C: At first I saw a big pool. There is a lot of water. So I guess it is a sea. But it is not. And then we see a lot of people standing in line. And they are making out some forms. And then we see some people are playing in the pool. It is like a mud pool. I think they are playing there. And maybe they will have a good time and enjoy themselves. OK.

H: OK. Thank you very much. OK, now please score for these 3 contestants. OK, Marijane, some comments?

J: Well, OK. Number 4 had a really active imagination. And more than half of this event is based on your imagination. So the description part is the first part. And it should be good. That was fine. But you spend a lot of energy on your imagination part. And you describe it really well. It was funny and well presented. It even had a beginning and an ending. And the ending was a surprise. And I just thought you did an excellent job. Creating that in 10 seconds. It’s really amazing. And I really commend you. But to say to the other two, it’s not something you get much chance to practice as an English student. This is a kind of secret skill. So when you don’t have the opportunity to be taught this, the way to learn it is by exploring it yourself. So I just encourage you when you go home to do some of this. Look at things and use your imagination and think how could I make the story? What my ending be? And continue work on it. Because it’s very funny and opens up a whole new part of your language learning experience. So, I command you all for trying.

H: And let’s look at the video clip again to find out what they are doing.

Congratulations! It’s really a mud race.

Yes, you know that this is really a mud race. But it reminds me a kind of remedy. Because in India, I know there is some therapy just called “mud therapy”. Because in India, people believe the mud can cure disease in some way. But I’m not sure whether any mud is helpful for health. So next time when you get your hands dirty with mud, be sure to clean them before you go to have dinner.

OK, so, thank you very much! Thank you three! Well done!

H: Let’s move on and the 3rd group is contestant number 7 to 9. Welcome to be on the stage!

So do you think you need a discussion to decide which number you’ve going to pick up on the big screen? Or you have had a number?

  C: Number 4.

H: OK, number 4. So, it’ll be your turn, contestant number 7. You two take the seats. Ok, ready? OK, here we go!

OK, so what is the man doing? You got 10 seconds to think about that.

C: There are some vegetables in the first picture. And the man just took out the center of the vegetables to make some special artificial presents. And this kind of presents are made for cakes. And on the cakes it can put them in the center of the cake. And this can be very beautiful to match the color of the cake and also the candles. And he wanted to celebrate the special birthday of his father. His father is going to be 100 years old. And vegetable symbolize long life.

H: OK, so that’s really a special gift to the 100 years old father. Thank you very much. And you have to switch with contestant number 8. OK, did you enjoy the music?

C: Yes, it was quite loud!

H: OK, keep eye on the big screen and see what we have for you.

That’s it. You got 10 seconds to think about it.

C: In the film, we see that there is an old man with 3 types of vegetables and fruits. One is an apple, a carrot, and a potato. He takes a stick and pulls the middle of carrot out. Do you know what he is trying to do? Well, his little grandson who is only 5 years old couldn’t find his blocks that he has played with to step a tower. So he has to find a substitute. The only thing he can find is the fruit and vegetables. He is trying a lot of ways. He chops the carrot. He chops the potato. And he even chops the apple. Finally he makes little things right like blocks for his little grandson. But they are quite thin. And his grandson cannot step a tower with them. His grandson is very frustrated. And finally in the end, he just picks all of those little blocks off and eats them! Thank you!

H: OK, now we’ll have contestant number 9 onto the stage and to watch the video clip. It’s your turn. Are you ready? OK. Here we go!

OK, tell us what the man do?

C: OK, from this video clip, we can see an old man is doing something about the carrot. Maybe he is making a sugar. I mean everybody like sugars. Nowadays our children always pick some sugars. Because they don’t like them. They had enough. And this old man wanna make another kind of sugar which satisfy the children’s mind. So he is really think about love. And finally he makes another kind of sugar with this material. That’s it. Thank you!

H: OK, please join the other 2 and standing at the center of the stage.

So, please score for these 3 contestants. So we watched the video clip for 3 times! And if I watch for the 4th or even more, I would have no idea. So, Allison, would you like to say a few words?

J: Yes. I just like to say that I thought everybody has been offering great creativity today. I think contestant number 8 has exceptional ability to speak very fluently and smoothly, using the correct intonation. But I would say that all of you are very present with the audience. Each one of you connected them on a different level. And I commend you for doing that. Very difficult with such a large group to do that. So, great job! And keep up that good work!

H: OK, now let’s see the video again and see what he finally trying to do. OK, such a surprise! Thank you all for your wonderful stories.

And the 4th group is contestant number 10 to12. Let’s welcome them! OK, you three first tell us what number you’ve chosen.

  C: We choose number 5.

H: OK, so contestant number 10 will be the first. Please get ready for the video clip.

OK, you got 10 seconds to think about the video clip.

C: OK, I wanna say 2 parts. In the video we can see the man is using his finger to draw a fish on the computer screen. This is a very special computer screen. It is very advanced. You don’t have to use a mouse to draw it. You just use your fingers on the screen to draw the fish. And the 2nd part is his purpose. I think he is a scientist of biology in the ocean. And maybe he is studying about the fish. Maybe the fish is very delicious. It will do very good to human being. Thank you!

H: So the man is doing a research about the fish. OK, that’s your first version.

And please take the seat of contestant number 11.

And let’s hear the 2nd version. OK. Are you ready for the video clip?

  C: Sure! Yes, I’m ready!

H: That’s it! You got 10 seconds to think about that.

C: I guess this is an ocean park. Some people are doing a research for protecting the fish. Because there are creatures under the sea. So they are trying to draw some fish and make the other real fish think that there are still a lot of fish. We didn’t lose our friends. So they think they still live in the sea which there are a lot of fishes. Also I think because the people who are doing the research are trying their best to help the fish. So, I hope that they are also protecting the fish. Especially preventing their eyes from the local voice. I think we should do something better than this. Thanks!

H: And now we’d like to invite the last contestant of this group, contestant number 12.

C: in the video clip, we can see that a man was creating an electronic fish with high technology, with the computer actually. I think that the fish was swimming just as a real one. Very lovely and very interesting program, I think. And high technology has brought us a lot more than this to make our lives more beautiful and convenient. So I think in the future, we’ll keep up the good work and keep on creating so many special techniques and to make better lives. Thank you!

H: Thank you. Now the 2 girls will join you and wait for the score. So the judges now, would you please score contestant number 10. Any more comments on these three’s performance?

J: On contestant number 10. She starts about talking about the scientist. And I thought this has a lot of potential. And then she switch over to talking about delicious. And so she needed to make the connection between what the scientist was studying that the fish would become more delicious. But it was a good start talking about the fish design. Number 11, the underwater park, computer-generated fish. Very high level vocabulary used in this and talking about protecting the fish. I thought it was a great idea. And then number 12 also very high level vocabulary using technical terms: electronic fish, high technology. Overall, I thought they did very well.

H: OK, now let’s wait and see what happens next. So what is it? Yes, it’s a restaurant. They have screen where they can see fish.

So the fish is a kind of advertisement.

A kind of decoration of the restaurant. OK. That’s really a surprise. Thanks very much!

H: OK, now it’s time for last two contestants. Let’s welcome contestants number 13 and14.

OK. There are two numbers left. And what’s your number?

  C: We choose number 2.

H: OK, it’s your turn. So, number 14 you have to put on the headset.

Number 2. OK, now let’s check on the screen what number 2 is. You got 10 seconds.

C: In this video clip, there are some people making some toys with the mud. And 2nd clip there are two men just doing something. And in the 2nd part, there are some children playing maybe the PC games on their computer. And we can get a conclusion that maybe it’s some computer designers design some computer games to let us to play. They use the mud to build some idols. Then they use these to put them in their computer games. This is my opinion, thank you!

H: OK, thank you! It’s your turn, number 14. Are you ready?

Here we go! You can start now.

C: What I saw on the picture is a new technology. First we saw the very beautiful lady, a sculpture. She is just an imagination. She is not true. She is a false woman. The director wants her to act film. But there are dangerous actions. So they find a man who can do the dangerous actions for the beautiful lady in the film. The man on the screen just like colon to do the dangerous action and to make the film more attractive to the audience. That’s all.

  H: OK, thank you!

You two please stand in the center.

Now please score contestant number 13. Any of the judges want to say something about their answering in this part? Pro.Teng, please.

J: I think I really appreciate the presentation and also the imagination that you are engaged. Once again, I do appreciate the vocabulary on the part of you. For example, you use a lot of technical terms: computer generated, art, also some film terms. I’m truly appreciating all these high-tech words. And once again the story out there is quite simple. But the weakness on this part is that you should tell us how this is going to be. How the story is going to be developed by fully engaging your imagination. I do congratulate you on the wonderful vocabulary and this wonderful presentation.

H: OK, thank you very much. Let’s take a 2nd look at the video clip and see what happens next.

OK, so do you know what this is? It’s a kind of animation.

They are designing a 3D animation figure. We see a very beautiful girl. OK, thank you very much.

Welcome back. You are watching the 4th annual of star of outlook English talent competition. And this is teenagers’ semi-final.

Actually we are nearing the end of today’s competition as all the 14 contestants have finished the 3 rounds of today’s competition.

And now, let’s first welcome the 14 contestants back onto the stage.

OK, so today’s competition is the semi-final. Only nine of you will survive the competition. And we’ll make your way into final of the final. That means 40% of you will be eliminated. Yes, so that’s really a tough competition. And I should say that it’s also a really close competition.

Yes, and I know that everyone of you want yourself to be in the final. Do you know who will be the top nine?

H: OK, so no matter what, they’ve done their best. So we should owe our thanks to all of them for their participation and support.
