As the world's second busiest subway, Moscow's subway has a capacity of transporting 8 million people per day. But over the years, it has become a frequent target for terrorists.
It is one of the largest subway networks in the world.
The first Moscow subway line was established in 1935. Today it has been transformed into a network of twelve lines, 180 stations, with a total length of 300 kilometers.
On February the 6th, 2004, a bomb went off inside a station, killing almost 50 people while injuring 130.
On August the 31st the same year, a Chechen female suicide bomber blew herself up inside one of Moscow's metro stations during rush hour. The incident killed 10 people and injured 50.
In May, 2008, Russia's anti-terror department prevented a series of terrorism conspiracies that targeted Moscow metro and cities of Caucasus areas.
