The Sudanese government has signed a framework peace agreement with the Kordofan sector of Darfur's rebel group Justice and Equality Movement.

By ending a recent conflict in the Kordofan region adjacent to Darfur, the government hopes to smoothen the way for upcoming elections.

Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa welcomed the peace agreement. He said the League is determined to work with the government of Sudan toward securing all basic services needed by the people of Darfur.

A group of senior political and military officials of the rebel JEM-Kordofan sector arrived in Khartoum on Sunday to sign the peace deal.
