Afghan President Hamid Karzai has appealed to Taliban fighters to lay down their weapons and accept the rule of law.
Sunday's statement comes as the government and its international allies push a program to entice militants away from the insurgency.
Hamid Karzai, Afghan President, said, "The Taliban are welcome to return to their own country, and work for peace, in order for us to be able and to have the US, and other forces, have the freedom to go back home."
It's reported that the president also expressed willingness to reconcile with Taliban leaders. But he made it clear that his offer doesn't extend to anyone in the Al-Qaida.
Karzai made the remarks three days after he and Western backers agreed at a conference in London to create a more comprehensive program to bring Taliban insurgents over to the government's side.
It is hoped that the move will reduce the violence that has ravaged the country in recent years.
