EU foreign ministers have met in Brussels to discuss the aid operation in Haiti. The EU's humanitarian aid has reached 120 million euros, coming from 18 member states and the European Commission.
EU officials also announced they will be sending 300 police officers to assist a security contingent of UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti.
Catherine Ashton, EU's High Rep. for Foreign Affairs, said, "We agreed today that member states will provide engineering expertise and equipment to open the routes that will facilitate aid getting through more easily, a maritime logistics capability which can operate without needing port facilities."
Karel De Gucht, EU Commissioner for Dev. & Humanitarian aid, said, "Now the urgent problem as it appears at the moment, involves constructing camps for internally displaced people. There are estimates that 250-thousand people are now living in open spaces, who are vulnerable to the elements."
