Israel doubles record for world's biggest serving of hummus

Israel on Friday took the upper hand in a new kind of Mideast conflict - one involving chickpeas - via it's minority Arab population.

Hundreds of jubilant Israelis, a mix of Arabs and Jews, gathered around the giant dish in the town of Abu Ghosh near Jerusalem on Friday. Using a satellite dish, cooks whipped up more than four metric tons of hummus, the chickpea paste that is a staple for many in the Middle East.

The cooks doubled the previous record for the world's biggest serving of hummus, set in Lebanon in October last year. Some Lebanese have announced plans to sue Israel to stop it from marketing hummus and other regional dishes as Israeli.

They called it a Lebanese food that had been appropriated by Israelis. Israeli organizers played down the conflict, saying "competition is a healthy thing."
