Russian, US presidents discuss arms reduction via telephone

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his US counterpart Barack Obama spoke via telephone on Saturday to discuss a new nuclear weapons cuts treaty.

According to a statement posted on the Kremlin's website, they exchanged views on the progress and prospects of the two countries' nuclear disarmament talks.

Medvedev and Obama announced at their first meeting in April that the two countries are working on a replacement for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which expired on December 5th. Negotiations will continue in Geneva next week.
