Security tight as Afghan presidential inauguration nears

As Thursday's Afghan presidential inauguration draws near, the security situation is intensifying in the national capital, Kabul.

Security forces are increasing patrols and helicopter flyovers, with the aim of fending off Taliban militants, who might undermine the festivities. A spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry says roads leading to embassies have also been blocked.

President Hamid Karzai will be sworn in for his second five-year term when the inaugural ceremony gets underway. Many in the international community hope he can introduce solid reforms, and pave the way for a clean Cabinet. His first term has been marred by allegations of corruption.
