Thousands of Palestinians, carrying Hamas flags, took to the streets of Gaza City late on Sunday to protest the day's clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police in Jerusalem.

Israeli riot police stormed the most sensitive holy shrine in Jerusalem, firing water cannons and stun grenades to disperse Palestinian protesters who had pelted them with stones and petrol bombs. Police behind shields marched towards men covering their faces with T-shirts and scarves, sending many of them running for cover into the Al-Aqsa mosque.

They remained holed up in the mosque with police outside for several hours until they dispersed before nightfall. Eighteen protesters were arrested and no serious injuries were reported.
