Suspected Taliban gunmen have attacked Pakistan's army headquarters in Rawalpindi. The assault sparked a gun-battle that killed four attackers and six soldiers.
The attack began shortly before noon on Saturday when the gunmen, dressed in military uniforms with assault rifles and grenades, drove in a white van up to the army compound and tried to force their way inside.
The militants then slipped into the complex, sparking a gunbattle that killed four assailants and six soldiers.
The army said up to five militants then held between 10 to 15 security officers hostage inside its headquarters.
Reports later said that eight of the hostages had been freed by the attackers.
But an army spokesman later denied that any army or intelligence leaders were among those being held on Saturday, as top army officials were reportedly trapped in the compound during the assault.
Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The assault close to the capital was the third major militant attack in Pakistan in a week.
