The United States special envoy has met President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo as he attempts to renegotiate a middle-east peace deal, seen as critical to President Barack Obama's initiative to revive negotiations.

George Mitchell is in the region trying to renew stalled peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

He met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Thursday.

While the US is pressuring Israel to end settlement building on Occupied Palestinian land, it is also leaning on Arab states to begin normalizing ties with Israel prior to a peace deal.
