Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is praising the decision by the Obama administration to scrap plans for a long-range missile defence system in Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, Czechs and Poles are expressing mixed reactions.

The project has been a major irritant in US relations with Moscow for years.

Medvedev said he and Obama discussed the issue of missile proliferation in meetings earlier this year in London and Moscow and agreed to work together to reduce that risk.

Medvedev said, "We appreciate this responsible move by the US president towards realizing our agreement. I am ready to continue the dialogue."

Mixed reactions from Czechs and Poles reflected deep divisions over a proposal some fear would make them a target for attack.

Former Polish President Lech Walesa said, "I just don't like this policy. It's not because we needed this missile defence system so badly. It's all about a way of treating us. It has to change. The US can't play military policeman of the world."

Czech Prime Minister Jan Fidcher said, "The Czech Republic acknowledges the announcement of the President of the United States on this decision. We were aware about the possible backing away as well as the fact the analysis by specialists in the US is ongoing."
