Reacting to US President Barack Obama's decision to impose punitive tariffs on imported Chinese tires, China's Foreign Ministry said the move was an act of trade protectionism, that went against commitments made at the G20 summit.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said China strongly disapproved of the decision, which was taken in spite of China's stance.

Jiang, said the US decision will undermine economic and trade ties between China and the US, and undermine the speedy recovery of the world economy.

China has lodged a formal representation to the US, and said it reserved the right to take further action.
