Official figures released today shows that voter turnout hit record high in Japan's lower house election. Both single-seat districts and proportional representation segments reported turnouts of over 69 percent.
Sunday's turnout topped the previous high of over 67 percent in the last general election 4 years ago. Observers believe this was largely because a record number of voters had cast early ballots before Sunday.
Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications says a record number of nearly 14 million people cast their ballots.
