
Play VideoThe election commission says President Hamid Karzai and his rival, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, have both gained roughly 40 percent of the nationwide vote for the Presidency. These early figures are based on 10 percent of the country's ballots.
The commission says Karzai has 40.6 percent and Abdullah has 38.7 percent in the country's first official returns since last Thursday's election. If neither two leaders wins more than 50 percent, they will face each other in a run-off election.
The commission is expected to release partial results everyday day, for the next several days. Final tallies for the election, will be released in September.
