In the sixteenth century, this area was constantly hassled by Japanese pirates. So in 1560, Ming Government built WeiYuan Fort on the top of Zhaobao Mountain to fight off the Japanese pirates.
Since then, Zhenhai kou experienced many major naval wars in last several hundred years including anti-British, anti- French and anti-Japanese wars. And now it is the largest and one of the best-kept ancient naval fortresses in China.
