As the joint NATO-Afghan military operation entered its third day in Taliban bastion of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, at least 27 insurgents have been killed, with 11 others detained.

12 civilians were also killed in the battle. Coalition forces will continue their operation until security is ensured in the area.

The code-name for the operation is "Mushtarak," which means "Together". It involves a joint force of around 15,000 NATO and Afghan troops.

The new strategy aims to crack down on the Taliban in Helmand province and pave the way for re-establishing government control in that area.
