While people in Rio de Janeiro are celebrating, it's a more somber mood in the countries that missed out. In Tokyo, Chicago, and Madrid -- hearing the results has been heartbreaking.
For thousands of Madrid supporters, the 2016 Olympics is likely to be remembered as the fiesta that was nearly theirs.
Crowds gathered in front of the Royal Palace in anticipation of celebrating. Then came the painful, final announcement.
But some still expressed confidence that Madrid could compete and win the 2020 Olympics.
Daniel Criado, Madrid Resident, said, "I knew it was going to be like this, it doesn't matter. Let's go to Rio and have a dance. There's great music in Rio."
Fernando Vecina, Madrid Resident, said, "In all honesty I was hopeful that we were going to come out winners, but we'll get it next time."

In Chicago meanwhile, thousands of people stood in bewildered silence in the city's downtown district ... as the International Olympic Committee eliminated the city from the race in the first round.
