The army is reporting that over 100 Taliban fighters have surrendered to the military in the country's northwestern Swat Valley. A weekend suicide bombing in the area has prompted a major security crackdown, and left scores of militants dead.
The army says eight of the fighters who surrendered were close aides to Swat Taliban chieftain, Maulana Faz-lullah. Pakistan's military, also says its forces have destroyed four insurgent bases and killed more than 35 rebels in battles near the Khyber Pass, the main route for supplies to NATO troops in Afghanistan. The new fighting broke out days after a suicide bombing in the Khyber region killed 19 border guards.
