Japan's Daily Yomiuri is predicting that the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan could win more than 300 seats in the upcoming lower house elections. That far exceeds the 241-seat majority.
That's the result of a survey conducted by the national newspaper between Tuesday and Thursday. It also predicts that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party is likely to lose ground to the DPJ, not just in big cities, but also in rural areas, the LDP's traditional electoral power base.
But in the poll, about 20 percent of respondents said they had yet to decide on their candidate and party, suggesting the current tide could change as the campaign period nears its end.
