In the elsewhere of Europe, other world leaders have been commemorating the end of the war.
US President George W. Bush joined Dutch leaders and hundreds of veterans at a cemetery in the Netherlands. Bush says the United States and Europe must build on the alliance cemented in World War Two to bring democracy to the Middle East in the 21st century.
In London, Prince Charles led the UK in marking the 60th anniversary of Victory in Europe. While in Berlin, a neo-Nazi march overshadowed Germany's ceremonies marking the end of the war. Despite this, German President Horst Kohler insisted that neo-Nazis "have no chance" today because the vast majority of Germans don't support them.
