Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan said China is happy with the smooth election congratulating Mahmoud Abbas on his success and sounding hopes that the new president will lead his people towards statehood. Kong also expressed Beijing's continued support for Palestinian efforts to regain national rights. China wasn't alone; reaction also came in from major world bodies.
EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said: "It's an important step towards the creation of a workable and democratic Palestinian State. All the involved parties have to work together to guarantee peace in the Region. I understand that Mr. Abbas and his Israeli counterpart have declared to be ready to meet each other, which appears very encouraging to me."
Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa said "I would like to take the chance to congratulate President Abu Mazen on winning the election. We all support him for the rights of the Palestinian people and supporting the moves to end this conflict according to what was said in the Arab proposal, and according to international precedents on the legal rights of Palestinians, which would lead to security and stability for all."
