ISLAMABAD, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani Monday said National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and trial of former president Pervez Musharraf are two separate issues and cannot be compared.
Responding to a question whether the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) links the trial of Musharraf to NRO, Gilani told reporters that NRO and the trial of Musharraf are two separate issues, not connected, according to the private TV channel GEO News.
Musharraf promulgated the NRO before he declared a state of emergency in 2007. The NRO granted amnesty to politicians who faced charges within a specific period. PPP leader and current president Asif Ali Zardari, who faced quite a number of corruption charges, was one of those who benefited from the NRO.
On July 31, Pakistani Supreme Court ruled that Musharraf's decision to impose emergency rule and dismiss dozens of senior judges in 2007 was unconstitutional.
