TOKYO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale rocked Japan's Hachijojima Island, some 280 km south of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Thursday.
The focus of the quake, which occurred at 07:49 a.m. Thursday (2249 GMT Wednesday), was some 57 km under the sea off Hachijojima, said the agency, which estimated a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 for the quake with the focus located 40 km below the sea level.
No tsunami warning was issued.
The tremor was also felt in Tokyo as well as Fukushima, Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures.
There were no reports of casualties or damage to properties.
