North American commission to discuss environmental issues in U.S.

MEXICO CITY, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The Commission for Environmental Cooperation of North America (CEC) will hold its annual meeting from June 22 to 24 in Denver, U.S.

During the meeting, environment ministers from Mexico, Canada, the United States and specialists on climate change will decide the CEC Operative Plan for the coming five years and will set the bases for a trilateral agreement to develop a market of carbon bonuses as well as a regional strategy.

The proposal was made by Mexican President Felipe Calderon and will be presented during the UN conference on climate change in Copenhagen this December.

The CEC is an organization established by Mexico, Canada and the United States in order to address regional environmental concerns, help prevent potential trade and environmental conflicts, and promote the effective enforcement of environmental law.

The CEC also deals with environmental issues of sub-regional interest, mainly the challenges and opportunities from the free trade in the region.
