The international community has expressed unanimous opposition to the DRPK's nuclear test, calling it a clear violation of international law.
Meanwhile, foreign ministers attending the 9th Asia-Europe meeting have also condemned the DPRK's nuclear test. They've strongly urged the DPRK not to conduct any further tests.
After a brief emergency meeting, the UN Security Council released a statement approved by all member states condemning the test.
Vitaly Churkin, Russian ambassador to UN, "The members of the Security Council voiced their strong opposition to and condemnation of the nuclear test conducted by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on May 25, 2009 which constitutes a clear violation of resolution 1718."
In this statement read by rotating Council president Vitaly Churkin, the Security Council said it would begin work immediately on a new legally binding resolution addressing the DPRK's violation of resolution 17-18. The US and Japan have said they hope the UN will come up with a strong resolution against the DPRK this time around.
In Brussels, Belgium, NATO also released a statement condemning the nuclear bomb detonation.
James Appathurai, NATO spokesperson, "These tests are a threat to peace, security and stability in the Asia Pacific region. And they have called on North Korea to fully implement the relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions."
NATO has urged the DPRK to eliminate its nuclear weapons and related programs in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner. It also called on the DPRK to restore dialogue through six-party process.
