Afghan, U.S. military kill 60 Taliban fighters: Army

KABUL, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Afghan forces backed by the U.S.-led Coalition troops have killed 60 Taliban rebels in the troubled Helmand province south of Afghanistan, a joint statement of the army said Saturday.

"Afghan National Army Commandos of the 205th Corps, assisted by Coalition Forces, killed 60 militants in the city of Marja, Helmand Province," the statement added.

During the operation which begun on May 19 the troops also seized the single-largest drug cache in the region, the statement further added.

Taliban militants which in the past said to fight till last breathe have yet to make comment.

Afghan government, according to officials will liberate all the10 districts from the clutch of Taliban fighters in the country ahead of holding president election set for August 20 this year.
