An Air France passenger plane carrying more than 200 people has gone missing just after leaving Brazil.

The Airbus 330-200 was bound for Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. The control center lost contact with the plane shortly after its takeoff from Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil's air authorities confirm that an Air France jetliner has disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean. Reports says the plane disappeared from the radar screen over the Atlantic off the Brazilian coast.

News reports vary about the number of passengers on board, with some saying that 216 aboard while others say there were 228 people, including 12 crew.
