Why do we work? For the lucky ones, we work because we love it, but I think it's safe to say that for most people, we work so we can earn money to survive and make better lives for ourselves. Work takes up so much of our lives, when you are not working, what do you do? How do you spend your leisure time? In this episode, part of a special series commemorating the 30 th anniversary of China's opening up policy, we discuss how leisure time and recreation has changed in China over the years. We invited Zhong Yi, CEO of Jooin.com and Kelly Cha, VJ of Action English to join us in our lively discussion.

Since the 1980s, holidays in China have evolved in three phases…. Before 1990, individuals only had one day off a week on Sundays. Beginning in the mid-1990s, this was changed to a two-day weekend with Saturdays and Sundays off each week. This change, along with the institution of three Golden Week holidays a year – National Day, May Day and Spring Festival created major shifts in how the Chinese people spend their leisure time. Our two guests talked about what they do during their leisure time and shared with us about their own personal stories. People's recreational ways are definitely becoming more diversified. Zhong Yi loves traveling and talked about his travel experiences and Kelly Cha, a busy VJ, finds she has less free time to spend. We also give the floor to the studio audience to join in the discussion - we find that they not only pay attention to the tangible enjoyments but also spiritual ones. How do you spend your holidays and weekends?

Join us on Up-Close on Jan. 27 to learn more about the changes in people's recreation over the last 30 years.
