Marathon, crossing the finish line almost a
full minute ahead of his nearest competitor.

The women set off nearly 30 minutes ahead of their male counterparts.

The elite men in the field included four-time champion Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya and 2009 Houston Marathon Champion Merga. In the seventeenth mile Merga and fellow Ethiopian Solomon Molla, along with Kenya's Daniel Rono, began to separate themselves from the pack.

Among the women, American Kara Goucher slightly led defending champion Dire Tune and Salina Kosgei of Kenya coming into Kenmore Square. With a final burst of speed, Kosgei edged Tune by a mere second to win by the closest margin in the history of the race, and Tune collapsed in exhaustion at the finish line.

And after running a competitive finish, Goucher finished a disappointing third.

In the men's race, Merga won his second marathon in just over three months with a winning time of 2 hours 8 minutes 42 seconds, fifty seconds ahead of Kenya's Daniel Rono.

Both Merga and Kosgei won 150,000 U-S dollars in prize money.
