Special Report:   Harbin 24th Winter Universiade

The 24th Winter Universiade has just opened in Harbin in northeastern China. The 10-day competition has attracted a record number of about 4,000 athletes. Mark Dryer has more.

It was a typically cold night in the far north of China, but that couldn't detract from the enjoyment of the participants.

Athletes, coaches, judges and referees from 44 countries and regions gathered in China's "Ice City".

The Harbin Universiade is considered a rehearsal for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, giving athletes more international experience ahead of next winter.

Li Zhanshu, chairman of the organizing committee of the Universiade, welcomed those in attendance.

Li Zhanshu, Chairman of 24h Universiade,said, "We are earnestly expecting that the Harbin Games will be a great stage for university students all over the world to demonstrate their skills, develop their understanding and friendship and take part in a great festivity of sharing success and embracing both their dreams and the future."
