Nicole Cooke of Britain battled rainy weather and slippery conditions to grit her way to a gold medal in the women's cycling road race.

She finished Sunday's 126.4-kilometer race around the streets of China's capital in a time of 3 hours, 32 minutes, and 24 seconds -- edging out four other competitors in a crowded sprint finish.

Sweden's Emma Johansson was awarded the silver medal while Tatiana Guderzo of Italy took the bronze medal.
