Thailand weightlifter Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon won the gold medal in the women's 53-kilogram weightlifting event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics late Sunday afternoon.

The champion won with a combined total of 221 kilograms. Her individual raises were 95 kilograms in the snatch and 126 kilograms in the clean & jerk. South Korea's Yoon Jin-Hee captured the silver medal by pushing up 213 total kilograms.

Nastassia Novikava of Belarus, who also raised a combined 213 kilograms, grabbed the bronze.Chinese weightlifters did not join the competition in this catagory.

She lifted 95kg in snatch and 126kg in clean and jerk for a winning total of 221kg. She attempted to break the world record of 129kg held by China's Li Ping, but failed.

"I want to go back home and celebrate with my family as Tuesday is the Mother's Day of Thailand," she said, adding that she hasn't been home for three years because of training.
