During Paris Fashion Week, models display the latest clothing creations on the runway, to the sound of music filling the arena. Avant-garde or elegantly simple, the clothes they wear define the styles and materials of a certain period, and convey to the audience an appreciation of beauty.

In ancient times, by contrast, clothing was very simple, even monotonous. There was very little choice of fabric. In Ancient Egypt, mainly linen was used. It was woven from the fibre of the flax plant, which grew in wide areas along the Nile. Ordinary people tended to wear nothing but coarse linen clothes.
