Intro:

Few people would expect to achieve any major breakthroughs at the just concluded strategic and economic dialogue in Washington between the US and China. The two day talks which started from Monday is the highest profile bilateral mechanism that aims at addressing bilateral, regional and global issues such as trade balance, currency scheme, non-proliferation of WMD, climate change and energy collaboration.

Traditional issues of human rights and Taiwan seem to have been brushed aside for a while since China has become the top creditor of the US and will continue to buy American treasury securities despite the huge fiscal deficit of up to one trillion US dollars on the US side.

Can the safety of Chinese assets be protected and what does the US say about the carbon tariffs? How do we assess the commonality and disputes between the two leading economies in times of financial crisis? Today we are joined here live by Mr. Robert Poole, vice president of China Operations, US-China Business Council and Mr. Tao Wenzhao, senior research fellow with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. But, up first, let’s look at this footage to update you about the two-day dialogue.
