The sculpture is made of three tons of Dushan Jade, which is typical in Nanyang City of central China's Henan province. It took two years to complete the art work. The sculpture depicts two different scenes: those of the countryside, and of a bazaar. Close to 400 figures with different expression and poses are carved on the stone. Together they comprise a grand picture of hustle and bustle during the Qingming festival.
The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival is among the ten most renowned paintings in China. It's an elaborate painting on a grand scale, which made for extra difficulty when it came to caring it in stone. Staff from the Nanyang Tuobao Jadeware Company, which oversaw the making of the sculpture, believe the exhibit will further enhance knowledge of the jade carving craftsmanship in Henan.
