Hong Kong Fashion Week opens, bringing new looks for spring and summer 2008. There's a trade expo running along side and there are runway shows exhibiting beautiful as well as edgy creations from Asian designers.

Three designers are notable for their refreshing sense of freedom. The opening day showings featured inspirations that varied from traditional China to 1960's America. Peter Lau, Ika Butoni and Cecilia Yau produced showings full of energy, color and elegance on a stark white stage at the Hong Kong Convention Centre.

Bright reds and yellows and thigh-high slits brought to life Peter Lau's image of a modern Asian temptress.

His collection juxtaposed the constricting form of Mandarin-collar tops with loose-fitting diapers and bubble skirts below the waist. Paired with knee-high socks and high heels, the designs says Lau are intended as fun party outfits.

Ika Butoni's expression of playfulness is expressed in the spirit of hippies and free love. Evoking the retro spirit of the 60s, Ika's collection called "Let's Twist Again" does exactly that. Images of old Volkswagen beetles and flower designs were projected onto white backdrops. A single street sign prop reading "Happy Av" set the mood.
