The Civil Aviation Administration of China revealed on Friday that the State Council has recently approved the construction of five civil airports.

These will be located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous region, and the provinces of Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei and Gansu.

Li Jiaxiang, Director of Civil Aviation Admin. of China, said, "By 2010, total investment will reach 400 billion yuan. It will involve 140 airports, with 50 to be built, 12 to be relocated, and 78 to be renovated and expanded. The scale of the construction is unprecedented."

China has also issued 3 billion yuan in treasury bonds to support the airport construction in the central and western areas.

The country is planning to establish several hubs, like the one in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, and to build over 20 regional airports by 2010.

This work will consume around 3 million tons of steel and 50 million tons of cement over the next two years.

It will also create 2 million jobs a year, helping to boost domestic demand.
