On Sunday, up to five million passengers boarded trains at stations.

The ministry says recent heavy snow and rain in many parts of the country could be one reason why many are choosing to travel by train rather than planes and cars.

Another possible factor is the price of train tickets which authorities have ensured were not pushed up for the season.
